The route

A three-day loop out of Giant’s Castle using the mountain huts: up the Bushman’s River valley to Bannerman’s Hut, over Langalibalele Pass onto the escarpment, and back down Giant’s Pass. Huts mean a lighter pack, which makes this a good first multi-day.

Day by day

  1. Day 1

    Camp → Bannerman’s Hut

    12 km · 800 m up · Sleep: Bannerman’s Hut

Steady climb out of the Bushman’s River valley on a good path. Four to five hours. Water at the hut, so carry only what you drink.

  2. Day 2

    Langalibalele Pass → escarpment

14 km · 900 m up · Sleep: Wild camp on the escarpment

Up the pass in the cool of the morning, then walk south along the rim. Big country, easy underfoot, almost no one else up there.

  3. Day 3

    Down Giant’s Pass → camp

    16 km · 300 m up

Descend and contour back to Giant’s Castle camp with the buttress beside you the whole way. Time to visit the Main Caves before you drive out.

What to expect

Terrain

Well-used paths in the valley, grass and gravel on the passes. No scrambling anywhere on this loop.

Huts

Bannerman’s has bunks and a roof and nothing else. Bring a mat, bag, stove and water treatment. Book with the permit.

Weather

Snow closes the passes a few times each winter. Autumn is the sweet spot — cold nights, stable days, no thunderstorms.

Water

Reliable at the hut and in the valleys. On the escarpment, tarns and seeps that shrink in a dry winter — treat everything.

Wildlife

Eland and grey rhebok on the lower flats, lammergeier along the escarpment. There is a vulture hide near the camp worth booking.

Hazards

  • Winter snow and ice on the passes
  • Exposed escarpment camp with no wind shelter
  • Long day three with a big descent
