Northern Berg · Circuit
Mnweni Circuit
Hard
The route
The best multi-day circuit in the Berg and the one with the fewest people on it. Up Rockeries Pass, two days along the escarpment past the Mnweni Needles, and down Mnweni Pass into the valley. No huts, no signage, community-managed and properly wild.
Day by day
- Day 1
Cultural Centre → upper Mnweni valley
Easy valley walking on cattle paths through the community land. Greet people, they live here. Camp or take the cave where the valley narrows.
- Day 2
Rockeries Pass to the escarpment
The big day. Start early, ration water, and expect five to six hours to the top. Once up, walk 30 minutes back from the edge to a sheltered camp.
- Day 3
Escarpment traverse → down Mnweni Pass
Rim walking past the Needles and the Saddle, then commit to Mnweni Pass. Loose and steep. Ledgers Cave at the bottom is a good reward.
- Day 4
Out through the valley
Retrace the valley paths to the Cultural Centre. Flat, hot, and a river crossing that can be knee-deep after rain.
What to expect
Terrain
Cattle paths in the valley that come and go, then trackless grass and scree on the passes. Nothing is signposted anywhere on this route.
Navigation
You need a map, a compass and the ability to use them. GPS as backup, not as the plan. Paths braid constantly in the valley.
Water
Plentiful in the valleys, thin on top. Both passes have long dry sections in their upper halves — fill before you commit.
People
This is community land with cattle, herders and homesteads. Pay the fee, ask before you pitch near a homestead, take everything out with you.
Solitude
You can go four days without seeing another hiking party. Also means no help nearby — carry a PLB or satellite messenger.
Hazards
- No cell signal for most of the circuit
- Loose ground on Mnweni Pass with a heavy pack
- River crossings after heavy rain
- Fully self-reliant — nearest help is a day away
