Southern Berg · Out and back
Rhino Peak
Hard
The route
The Southern Berg’s signature day hike. A relentless climb out of Garden Castle up the Mashai spur to a summit that looks straight down the length of the escarpment. Steep, direct, and over in a long day.
Day by day
- Day 1
Garden Castle → Rhino Peak → back
Straight up the spur from the gate with barely a flat section. Three to four hours to the summit, two and a half back down. Start at first light in summer to beat both the heat and the storms.
What to expect
Terrain
A path the whole way, but a steep and eroded one. Some easy hands-on steps near the summit ridge, nothing more.
Fitness
1200 m in about 7 km. It is a sustained grind rather than a technical route — pace it and take the false summit on the chin.
Weather
Fully exposed above the last water. Snow in winter makes the top section genuinely serious.
Water
One stream low down. Carry 3 L in warm weather.
Note
The annual Rhino Peak Challenge fills the mountain for one day in September — check the date before you plan around it.
Hazards
- Sustained steep descent on eroded path
- No shelter and no water above the spur
- Afternoon thunderstorms on an exposed ridge
