Cape vulture
Gyps coprotheres
A large, creamy-buff vulture with dark flight feathers — southern Africa’s only endemic vulture. Cape vultures breed in colonies on cliff faces, including along the high Drakensberg escarpment, and soar for hours on mountain updrafts in search of carcasses. Poaching for traditional medicine, power lines and poisoning are their biggest threats.
