Natal ghost frog
Hadromophryne natalensis
A frog of fast, clear mountain streams, usually above waterfalls that keep trout and other fish out. Its tadpoles have sucker-like mouths to hold on in the torrent, graze algae off the rocks and take up to two years to develop, so they need streams that never run dry. Introduced trout, dams and silt are its main threats.
- Where
- Valleys, Slopes · 1,280–2,865 m
- When
- All year — tadpoles take up to two years to develop
- How to spot it
- Rock crevices and the splash zone of cascades in forested gorges — adults sometimes wait there for prey even by day.
