Verreaux’s eagle
Aquila verreauxii · Black eagle
A big black eagle with a white rump and a white V on the back, unmistakable in flight. Pairs hold territories along cliff lines and live mainly on dassies — somewhere between 70 and 180 a year for a pair. Globally secure, it is listed as Vulnerable in South Africa and Lesotho, where wind farms and persecution add to its losses.
