Mammal
Oribi
Ourebia ourebi
A dainty, sandy-red antelope with white underparts and a white curve above each eye; only the rams have short, straight horns. Oribi need open grassland with both short grass to feed on and tall tufts to hide in. Globally they are not threatened, but in South Africa only about 2,000 mature animals remain, and the Berg population has been shrinking.
- Where
- Valleys, Slopes · 1,280–2,865 m
- When
- All year — easiest on fresh green burns
- How to spot it
- Open grassland in the reserves of the central and southern Berg — Kamberg, Highmoor, Giant’s Castle and Garden Castle. When flushed they bounce away in a zigzag with a sharp whistle.
