Eland
Tragelaphus oryx · iMpofu
Africa’s largest antelope: big bulls can weigh well over 700 kg, yet eland can clear about 1.5 m in a jump. Early travellers described herds summering on the high Berg grasslands and wintering in the lower foothills, and they still move out onto the open grassland when the rains arrive. Eland are the animal most often painted in San rock art, where they carried deep spiritual power.
- Where
- Valleys, Slopes · 1,280–2,865 m
- When
- All year — out on the open grassland once the summer rains bring new growth
- How to spot it
- Scan open grassy slopes and spurs early and late in the day; Giant’s Castle and Kamberg are reliable. Look for the tawny bodies, twisted horns and the bulls’ heavy dewlap.
