Bird
Yellow-breasted pipit
Macronyx chloris
In breeding dress it has bright lemon-yellow underparts; in winter it is dull and easily overlooked. It breeds in moist, lush, tussocky grassland, mostly above 2,000 m, and moves lower and west in winter. Overgrazing, burning every year and wind farms all threaten it.
- Where
- Valleys, Slopes · 1,280–2,865 m
- When
- Summer on the high grassland — lower down in winter
- How to spot it
- Tall, tufted high grassland in summer. Listen and look for males singing in display flight above the grass.
