Bird
Gurney’s sugarbird
Promerops gurneyi
A slim songbird with a long, curved bill, a long tail, a russet crown and breast and bright yellow under the tail. It depends heavily on protea woodland — especially the silver protea — for nectar and nest sites, and moves around with the flowering. Too-frequent fires and afforestation have fragmented its habitat.
- Where
- Valleys, Slopes · 1,280–2,865 m
- When
- All year — breeds while the proteas flower, spring to late summer
- How to spot it
- Protea stands on the lower slopes when the proteas are in flower; males often call from the top of a bush.
