One of only two bamboos native to South Africa, forming clumps of canes 1–5 m tall that are maroon when young. Formerly Thamnocalamus tessellatus, it now has a genus of its own. The whole population flowers together roughly every 45 years — KZN records note 1908, 1953 and 1998/99 — and it is the food plant of the rare bamboo sylph butterfly.
