Spiral aloe
Aloe polyphylla
A stemless aloe whose leaves grow in five ranks forming a striking spiral, clockwise or anti-clockwise. It grows in basalt crevices on very steep, wet slopes in the Lesotho highlands, mostly at about 2,000–2,500 m. Collecting and changes to its water supply from overgrazing have reduced wild numbers, and removed plants seldom survive.
