Drakensberg gladiolus
Gladiolus flanaganii · Suicide gladiolus
A red gladiolus that grows on basalt cliff faces and ledges of the escarpment, from Sani Pass north to Mont-aux-Sources (so on both the KZN and Lesotho sides of the border). It often grows where it looks impossible to reach — collectors risked their necks for it, hence the grim nickname. Older books sometimes label it G. cruentus, a lower-altitude coastal species.
- Where
- Slopes, Summit · 1,830–3,480 m
- When
- Midsummer — mainly Dec–Jan
- How to spot it
- Cliff faces along the escarpment in midsummer, usually where the rock runs with water. Admire it from the path — never climb for it.
Take careGrows on dangerous cliffs. Don’t pick or dig it.
