Grassland tree fern
Alsophila dregei · Common tree fern, Gewone boomvaring
A tree fern with a thick black trunk, usually about 3 m tall, crowned with arching fronds up to 3 m long; old fronds hang down as a brown skirt. Gardeners still call it Cyathea dregei. Unusually for a tree fern it grows out in the open grassland, and its thick fibrous trunk lets it survive fast-moving grass fires.
